North Carolinan mother Jessica Hayes was distraught after finding her daughter’s shoes taped to her feet at daycare.
Facebook
Jessica took to Facebook where she posted photos of her daughter’s swollen feet after finding out that two daycare workers allegedly taped the shoes to keep them on. Her 17-month-old daughter attends Pleasant Hills Daycare in Elkin.
Hayes’ post was captioned with, “Does anyone see an issue with this? Am I the only one?”
In another post, Hayes elaborated on the incident and said, “I am upset that this happened to my child as someone was clearly upset that she was learning take her shoes off and done it out of being aggravated. This was also not just her shoes being taped up it was around her ankle…My 17-month-old child was unable to say anything.”
“This was left on long enough and tight enough to leave marks, cause swelling, and bruise. I appropriately reacted and went straight to the director who was just as speechless as I was. I then went to take the tape off and my daughter was crying as this was obviously uncomfortable to her.”
When Hayes approached the director of Pleasant Hill, Maehsell Marley, they reviewed the daycare’s security footage. The daycare then let go of the two employees who were responsible for taping up the toddler’s feet.
A statement was then released by Marley saying, “Pleasant Hill Day Care in no way condones or allows any practice that would be harmful to a child. We have an outstanding group of caregivers who strive to meet the highest of expectations on a daily basis for the children in our care, and what occurred in the shoe-taping incident is not a representation of who we are.”
After the incident, Hayes said in her post that she will continue sending her daughter to Pleasant Hill.
“I am able to go to work and go about my life since the incident took place. My daughter went straight back to the daycare the very next day and rest of the week. As I feel comfortable to do so and WILL continue to do so. This being said EVERYONE else should be able to do the same. I am positive this won’t happen to another child as it has raise awareness to all.”
