You’ve probably heard by now that one of the world’s most famous and highest-paid DJ’s of all time, Avicii, passed away several weeks ago at the young age of 28.

The Swedish celebrity, whose real name was Tim Bergling, died while on holiday in Oman on April 20.

Despite achieving massive worldwide success, Avicii’s lifestyle took a toll on his emotional and psychological well-being. It was reported that he ended his own life while in a farmhouse surrounded by an electric gate that allowed him to choose who could enter the premises.

But Avicii’s little-known charitable works have now come to light one week after his tragic passing.

From all his chart-topping songs and sold-out shows and concerts, Avicii managed to amass an enormous fortune of more than $109 million. Instead of burning cash buying private jets and mansions in every city in the world, Avicii gifted a significant portion of his money to charity.

In 2012, he donated every cent of his tour profits, which amounted to $1 million, to a hunger relief charity called Feeding America.

The charity runs a network of 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs all over the country. Their main focus is one school-based food pantries and emergency disaster relief.

The following year, he donated another one million euros to the Swedish aid organisation Radiohjälpen, for their “hunger aid” campaign which aimed to reduce malnutrition.

Following his death, the Swedish foundation paid tribute to the star and thanked him for the support he’s shown through the years.

A tweet from the organisation’s secretary general, Anna Hedenmo, reads: “Rest in peace Tim Bergling, and THANK YOU because you laid the foundation for ‘hunger aid’ with your generous contribution — 1 million euros — to Radiojälpen.”

His family, in a statement released last week, said, “Tim was not made for the business machine he found himself in; he was a sensitive guy who loved his fans but shunned the spotlight.”

In a 2013 interview, Avicii talked about his charitable efforts, saying: “I discovered when I started making money that I didn’t really need it.”

“When you have such an excess of money you don’t need, the most sensible, most human and completely obvious thing is to give to people in need,” he added.
