This 99 Year-Old Swimmer Just Broke 2 World Records

March 08, 2018

George Corones, a 99-year old from Queensland Australia, just broke two records for swimming at the Commonwealth Games trials.

He was an avid swimmer in his youth but only stopped swimming at the start of the second world war. He went back to swimming regularly for exercise when he was 80 and has been breaking personal records since.

Corones, who is turning 100 in April, did not expect to beat the record for the 50 meter freestyle event in his age category of 100-104. The previous record was set by British swimmer John Harrison in 2014 at 1:31.19. Corones finished at 56.12 seconds beating the previous record by a whopping 35 seconds.

He also beat another world record set by Harrison for the 100 meter freestyle event. Harrison’s 100 meter freestyle record was at 3:23.10 and Corones finished a minute earlier. He’s overwhelmed at  achieving two world records but he isn’t stopping yet.

“I’m just going to continue to do what I’ve been doing in the way I’ve been doing it,” he says. “Which is repetitively and patiently. I’m about to go through a stage of recovery, and as soon as I feel I’m ready, I’ll start again.”
