“Miracle Baby” Born So Premature Her Brain Showed Through Her Skin Celebrates 1st Birthday
Mother-of-three Cheri Price gave birth to daughter Hailie Dillon on February 23 last year only after six months and and six days of pregnancy.
This meant that Hailie was born so premature, her skin had not had time to develop pigmentation and her skull had not fully developed yet either.
Cheri got her first contractions on January 20 of last year, when she was just 20 weeks pregnant. The first hospital they went to, St. Mary’s at Newport, said they didn’t have the facilities to accommodate mothers before the 24-week mark.
22-year-old Cheri and her 32-year-old boyfriend, Timothy Dillon, travelled all the way to Darlington, Teesside, where they could be closer to his family. Cheri was battling contractions for eight hours.
Cheri spent about two weeks in the hospital at Middlesbrough and was about to head back home as she was nearing 24 weeks. As she was about to be discharged, her water broke.
Hailie was born weighing only 1lb 2oz. She survived a collapsed lung and seven minutes without breathing after she was born at James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough.
When Hailie was born, she was put in an incubator. She wasn’t allowed to be directly held, and you could see all the veins of her brain through her red skin.
18 days later, Cheri was able to hold her daughter for the first time.
According to the National Health Service, newborns are only considered “viable” after 24 weeks of pregnancy, and even then they only have a 35% chance of survival. Hailie was born at just 23 weeks.
Hailie is now a healthy 1-year-old.
Cheri and her boyfriend Timothy, together with their two sons and “miracle baby” Hailie, all live on the Isle of Wight in England.
