Robbie Williams is under fire after flipping the bird on live TV.

The English singer, songwriter, and actor was asked to perform during the Fifa World Cup opening ceremony.

Williams, who performed three songs, stunned fans after raising his middle finger at the Luzhniki Stadium as he was leaving the pitch.

The singer also changed a line of a song he was performing. The original lyrics of the song being “Every night pimpin’ ain’t easy” was changed to “Most of them fleece me, I did this for free”.

The 44-year-old Brit performed his songs alongside Russian soprano Aida Garifullina, and as he ended his performance, six million viewers worldwide witnessed the rude gesture he did on camera which sent Twitter into a meltdown.

Fox released a statement condemning and apologizing for the gesture:

“The 2018 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony was a newsworthy event produced by a third party and carried live on Fox. As it was broadcast live, we did not know what would happen during Robbie Williams’ performance and we apologize.”

It’s not clear why the 44-year-old singer did that. But many twitter users commented that he merely flipped the bird at the camera to “look cool”.

But the ageing singer isn’t off the hook any time soon. According to reports, if the gesture is proven to be an insult, he could be arrested and fined. He could face charges of outraging public indecency and could be asked to pay up to $8,000.
