Over 25 People Killed In Guatamela As Fuego Volcano Erupts

It’s been dubbed the most violent volcano eruption in decades in Guatamela.

The Fuego volcano erupted on Sunday, leaving at least 25 people dead and hundreds more injured. Officials had previously warned citizens around the area of continued volcanic activity and are currently doing their best to evacuate the area.

According to the CONRED, which is the government’s national coordinator for disaster reduction, the volcano spewed out a river of red, hot lava and gushed out black clouds of smoke. This is the second time that the Fuego volcano has erupted this year.

The Vulcan de Fuego, which literally translates to volcano of fire, is the most active volcano in central America and is located near the colonial city of Antigua.

The capital, Guatamela city, which is just 20 miles southwest of the volcano, was blanketed in smoke and ash. These events led to the closure of its international airport.

Citizens were told to evacuate the area, but many were not able to escape.

According to reports, 25 people have been declared dead while many have been severely burned and injured. According to Guatamela’s minister of health, 15 people have been hospitalized, 12 of whom are children.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto expressed condolences and offered assistance.

“All our solidarity and support to the President Jimmy Morales and the Guatemalan people for the loss of human life after the eruption of the volcano of Fire.”

Since the volcano’s eruption on Sunday, More than 3,100 people have been evacuated from the area. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing as lava and smoke continues to spread through the vicinity.
