It’s shocking to see what an animal would do to itself when it desperately wants to survive.

A crayfish amputated its own arm before diners had the chance to have him for dinner in China.

The video was uploaded to China’s social media platform called Weibo by the user Jiuke. He was having dinner when he saw the crayfish’s desperate attempts to stay alive.

In the 23-second clip, the crayfish is seen on the side of a metal hotpot where other crayfish are seen being boiled. But before anyone could put this one in the pot, diners were caught off guard when it severed its own arm.

Since being posted, its been viewed more than a million times, with users commenting saying that that crayfish deserved to live.

“Don’t eat him,” one person wrote. “Seeing how hard he’s trying to survive.”

And Jiuke responded on Weibo by saying, “I let him live, I already took him home and am raising him in an aquarium,”

Aside from being saved by Jiuke, the other good news is that the crayfish’s claw will eventually grow back due to its ability to regenerate severed limbs.

So what did the crayfish say to the god of death? Not today.
