The 29-year-old fell unconscious at the 22.5 mile mark of the 26.2 mile course, and had to be given emergency medical treatment. Race organizers later announced that Campbell passed away at the hospital.

Campbell was running his first London Marathon for the Brathay Trust, a charity that encourages vulnerable young people to improve their lives by engaging with their communities.

The professional chef from Lake District joined the marathon in honor of his late father, Martin, who died in 2016.

Campbell, who was able to reach the semi-finals on MasterChef: The Professionals last year, was a keen and talented athlete who completed the Great Manchester Marathon earlier this month under three hours.

Prior to Sunday’s race, Campbell tweeted a photo of himself with the caption: “Let’s do this.”

He also posted on the Masterchef UK Facebook page, saying: “Myself and Tom Peters after meeting in the final 12 of MasterChef have decided to run London Marathon together, I’m running for @brathayevents and Tom is running for @asthmauk.”

“We are nervous but feeling fit and ready! Gonna be as hot as the MasterChef kitchen was last year it looks like,” he added.

The cause of death has yet to be announced as of printing.

Campbell is the eleventh racing participant to have lost his life during the London Marathon since its conception in 1981.
