The jury, comprised of seven men and five women, made their decision after prosecutors were allowed to call five additional accusers to the stand.

Andrea Constand met Bill Cosby in 2004 while working for the women’s basketball team at Temple University in Philadelphia where Cosby is an alumni of. Constand accused Cosby of drugging her with pills before sexually assaulting her as she was drifting in and out of consciousness. The victim moved back to Toronto after the alleged attack.

In the same year, Constand sued Cosby in civil court but was met with an out-of-court settlement done in 2006.

This later provided evidence and speculation of why Cosby would pay if he was indeed innocent.

After the allegations, Cosby would claim that the encounter between him and Constand was consensual, but after dozens of women came forward and raised similar claims, the comedian admitted to giving Constand pills.

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele made a statement after the verdict was given:

What was revealed through this investigation was a man who had spent decades preying on women that he drugged and sexually assaulted and a man that had evaded this moment here today for far too long. He used his celebrity status, he used his wealth, and his network of supporters to help him conceal his crimes, and now we really know today who was behind that act, who the real Bill Cosby was, and a jury has spoken with one voice, in a court of law, and found the defendant guilty of drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand in his home.

After the verdict was disclosed on Thursday, sources close to the entertainer say that he and his family were unable to believe that he was deemed guilty, saying that this result was a product of institutionalized racism. Cosby is currently under house arrest while waiting for his final sentence to be declared.
