Cardi B misread the room.
The “WAP” rapper, 28, received backlash on Sunday when she asked her Twitter followers if she should buy an $88,000 purse, calling the out-of-this-world purchase “tempting.” Given the ongoing pandemic, mass unemployment and other issues plaguing society, Cardi’s fans didn’t take too kindly that she would casually throw money around like that.
“Sis, there’s an eviction crisis, folks can’t feed their families, students are drowning in debt, and people are sick with and dying of COVID,” tweeted one follower. “Most of us don’t have the luxury of $88 temptations so hearing you’re trying to drop $88k on a purse feels hella wrong.”
“Cardi we are going through a really rough time right now & a lot of people r scared that they won’t even be able to put a roof over their heads or food on the table,” tweeted another. “I love you but we r still going through Covid and the government isn’t doing s–t to help us and hasn’t 4 months.”
Though Cardi didn’t read the room, she did read the responses to her tweet, prompting her to spin the narrative and offer to match anyone’s charitable donations.
“Any charity or foundation drop your receipts under the comment I will match what you donated and match your donation to that same charity or foundation,” Cardi wrote. “Lets match energy.”
She also reminded her followers that she already has donated $2 million this year and alluded to a “special” project that she’s working on in another country.
“What have you donated ?” she asked a fan who called for her to donate the $88,000 she would’ve spent on the bag.
It’s unclear if she ended up buying the purse.
