The Unjust Arrest Of Two Black Men At Starbucks Has Led To A Symbolic Settlement of $1

May 03, 2018

After two men were unjustly arrested at a Starbucks in April, something positive has come of it.

Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson were at a Starbucks in Philadelphia for a business meeting and when Nelson asked to use the bathroom, he was told he couldn’t use it until he bought something.

When Nelson returned to the table where Robinson was waiting for their third associate, the manager approached them and told them they couldn’t stay unless they bought something.

Unsatisfied with whatever the pair told the manager, the cops were called and the two men were escorted out of the Starbucks in handcuffs. They were then taken to jail.

The arrest quickly went viral, with the public responding in anger at both the Starbucks manager and the police.

Both men could have sued the city of Philadelphia, especially after the mayor and the authorities admitted to the arrest being an error.

All parties agreed to a settlement that surprised everyone. Instead of pushing charges, they both accepted a symbolic $1 each from the city, but that’s not all the two men were asking for.

They’ve asked the city to fund a grant to support high school students who are interested in becoming entrepreneurs.

Aside from this agreement, the two men’s arrest records will be expunged and Starbucks will be paying for Nelson’s and Robinson’s college education in an undisclosed financial settlement.

Starbucks will be closing 8,000 of its stores nationwide for racial bias training starting May 29.

“We thought long and hard about it, and we feel like this is the best way to see that change that we want to see,” Robinson said. “It’s not a right-now thing that’s good for right now, but I feel like we will see the true change over time.”

Racial bias and discrimination are ongoing problems in America. Though this incident was unjust and horrific, it brought about a conversation that has led to a positive outcome.
