Army Veteran Has Saved More Than A Thousand Dogs In Three Years By Flying Them To Safety
May 21, 2018
Paul Steklenski is an army veteran who decided to take up flying in 2013. At that time, he also wanted to adopt a dog.

While looking for the purrfect pup, he found out that getting a dog from a pet store and one that’s in an animal shelter could make a difference.
When he adopted his dog Tessa from a shelter, he said it changed him. He wanted to help other dogs too.

So when he completed his flight training and received his license, he wanted to have a reason to put a plane in the air.

He started with doing missions for Pilots N Paws, a group that coordinates with volunteer pilots with animal rescue organizations that require help with transporting animals.

And in 2015, he wanted to save more animals, so he founded Flying Fur Animal Rescue. He would rent planes from Pennsylvania to North Carolina and then back up to the New York area.

With a plane, Paul said he could transport and save at least 15 to 20 animals out of the kill shelter.

When people ask Paul how he does it, he simply answers with, “It has cost me a small fortune. I’ve spent about $25,000 in the last two years. But I do it because it’s very rewarding.”

And with the help of other rescue organizations, he eventually was able to buy his own plane just to save animals.

He plans to have a dedicated farm in Pennsylvania with an airstrip so he can fly animals directly where the organization can have an intake, adoption, and rehab center.

“I don’t know how I’m going to get there yet, and it’s going to take a lot of money. But that’s my challenge. I’ve made it this far in three years. It’s on my shoulders now to figure out how to get us to where we need to be.”
