April 23, 2018

An Air India flight flying between Amritsar and New Delhi in India experienced extreme turbulence that shocked even its pilot.

The pilot reportedly had “never seen anything like this ever” as the crew and passengers were shaken three times the force of gravity which caused one inner airplane window to fall off and 2 oxygen masks to deploy.

The Boeing 787 carried 236 passengers and six crew members, all of whom had to endure the 15 minute period during the “freak kind of severe turbulence”. The incident could be seen in a recording shot by a passenger on board.

The video shows panicked passengers being consoled by one of the members of the cabin crew. The flight attendant is seen trying to push back the inner window which came loose.

The flight was only supposed to last for 30 minutes but was shaken so hard as it climbed on to 15,000 feet. One of the passengers had to get stitches when the plane arrived at New Delhi while two other passengers suffered from minor injuries. Though the inner window panel of the plane fell off, the outer one remained intact which means that there was no depressurization of air, and no risk of anyone getting sucked out through the window.

The terrifying incident comes days after passenger Jennifer Riordan died of her injuries as a result of being partially sucked out of a Southwest Airlines plane at 32,000 feet.

A probe has now been launched by aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Board regarding the incident with the Air India flight.
