The shooting carried out by gunman and former student Nicholas Cruz killed 17 students and staff at the high school in Parkland, Florida.

Carlitos Rodriguez, another student at Stoneman Douglas, told ABC News that if it weren’t for Anthony’s bravery, he would not have survived the shooting.

As gunfire echoed through the halls of their building, Anthony and his classmates tried to hide. Anthony was the last of 20 students to enter a room and was trying to lock the door when he was shot, according to Carlitos.

“But he didn’t move. He held his ground in the doorway and placed his body between us and the bullets,” Carlitos shared.

“He just called me and says, ‘Dad, somebody shot me in the back and my leg, too,” Mr. Borges said. “He’s my hero.”

Anthony was rushed to the hospital and has had nine surgeries and a third of a lung removed. One bullet was dangerously close to his liver, and three others tore through his legs.

He had previously been released but had to go back to the hospital after doctors suspected an infection in his abdomen.

Anthony is now back home, recuperating. His family has since moved from their walk-up apartment to a ground-floor unit as he continues to recover.
