This ‘little girl’ by the roadside is not what you think it is.

Disturbing video footage uploaded online shows a long-tailed macaque wearing a mask with blonde hair and sunglasses.

The monkey was also holding a blue bucket and wearing a pink tracksuit as it was chained to the side of the road.

The video was taken in Bogor, Indonesia and was filmed by a passing driver. While the monkey was doing its act, traditional music was being played in the background as he waited for strangers to give him money.

This performance is known as ‘Topeng Monyet’ which translates to “Monkey’s Mask” and is a disturbing practice in Indonesia. Usually, monkeys are chained so they won’t be able to escape.

This kind of disturbing practice was banned in the capital city of Jakarta, though it’s still common to see these in other parts of the country to entertain tourists. But many activists in Indonesia have spoken out against this and are pushing for the banning of Topeng Monyet nationwide.

Members of animal Friends Jogja (AFJ) staged a performance called “Air Mata Topeng Monyet (The Tears of Topeng Monyet)” to bring awareness to the public and urge them to join the fight.

Angelina Pane from AJF said: “Our investigation reveals that the long-tailed macaques undergo three to six months of training in a process that is very cruel.” The group only hopes that with global awareness, this practice can be fully stopped all over Indonesia.
