Cannes Film Festival announces a bumper competition for its delayed 2021 edition
After much uncertainty and plenty of rumours, the line-up for the hotly anticipated 2021 Cannes Film Festival has been unveiled by head honcho Thierry Frémaux. After being forced to cancel their 2020 edition due to Covid-19, Cannes are back with a bang, bringing a bumper crop of regulars and newcomers to the Croisette in July – two months later than the festival’s normal slot.
It was no surprise to hear Paul Verhoeven’s Benedetta and Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch would be making their bow at the festival, having been delayed from the previous year alongside Leos Carax’s musical Annette, which was announced as the opening film in April. Frémaux confirmed that they invited all accepted films from the 2020 edition to this year’s festival, and have formed a new section called ‘Cannes Premieres’ in order to free up space in Un Certain Regard for new filmmakers.
The lucky folks who make it to France amid travel restrictions and vaccine uncertainly can expect to see new films by Sean Baker, Julia Ducornau and Apichatpong Weerasethakul playing in competition, as well as the long-awaited Bergman Island from Mia Hansen-Løve. There are also new films from Cannes regulars François Ozon, Bruno Dumont and Hong Sang-soo.
As if that wasn’t enough, the line-ups for Director’s Fortnight and Critic’s Week will be announced later, and in typical Cannes fashion, Frémaux has promised a few surprise additions in the weeks to come. Check out the full line-up below and let us know what you’re excited to see @lwlies.
