In the latest issue of Little White Lies magazine, we’ve surveyed more than 100 years of British film history and picked out 100 extraordinary, lesser-known works which have in some way shaped our cinematic culture.

Front and centre in these films, we found themes ranging from the complex portrayal of race relations in the 1920s to revolutionary sexual overtones in the ’60s and beyond – including the first film to feature the word “homosexual”, other pioneering examples of British LGBT+ cinema, and a vital snapshot of the Black British experience.

This video essay by Luís Azevedo highlights 10 of these mould-breaking films, and there’s 90 more to discover in LWLies 80, which is on sale now.
