After almost a month of continuously pouring out lava, Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano is now spewing gemstones into the air.
Forbes
Many residents living on Hawaii’s Big Island have been finding tiny green gems on the ground called Olivines.
Friends of mine live in Hawaii, right next to the area impacted by the most recent lava flows. In the midst of the destruction nearby & stress of the unknown, they woke up to this – tiny pieces of olivine all over the ground. It is literally raining gems. Nature is truly amazing. pic.twitter.com/inJWxOp66t

This common mineral is found in Hawaii’s lava, and at jewelry quality, it’s called peridot.

When the lava spews out from the volcano, these tiny gemstones are also blasted up to the sky where they eventually come down in a rain of green crystals.
Geology In
Several places in Hawaii have beaches that are a green color. This means that there’s a high concentration of olivine that has weathered out of the basalt.
Forbes
Though 50% of the earth’s upper mantle is composed of olivine, the rain of crystals is an uncommon phenomenon brought about by the violent eruption of the volcano.

So how does this happen? When magma is sprayed high into the air, an area with high crystallisation temperatures allows the mineral to quickly transform into olivine before it hits the ground.
All That’s Interesting
Collecting these green pebbles won’t exactly make your bank balance higher as they aren’t all that expensive.
All That’s Interesting
But it’s certainly one of nature’s beautiful phenomenons that most humans can experience in this lifetime.
