Vermont High School Becomes First in Nation to Raise ‘Black Lives Matter’ Flag

e all celebrated Black History Month in elementary school. We'd learn about Rosa Parks and do presentations on Martin Luther King, Jr. during the month of February.

I don't know about you, but my Black History education was firmly rooted in the past. We learned about huge civil rights events that moved the needle A Long Time Ago. But we never really explored the current struggles that black people face in this country.

One high school has vowed to change their ways this year.

Montpelier High School in Vermont has become the first in the country to raise the Black Lives Matter flag.

They had an official flag-raising ceremony on Thursday, February 1 to signify the beginning of Black History Month.

Black History education is more important than ever considering who's in the White House.

Donald Trump has demonstrated time and time again that he is racist. He’s attacked black citizens of our country on many occasions, several of whom are working to fight the injustices that they face every day in our society.

Even Ivanka Trump failed to appropriately honor Black History Month with this tone-deaf tweet:

She effectively erased the entire point of the tradition by claiming that Black History Month should be about “all Americans.”

It's exactly because people like this are in charge that we must educate ourselves and listen to the stories of black Americans in this country, past and present.

Montpelier High School’s first step toward making sure this happens is to raise the Black Lives Matter flag outside their school.

Black students took turns helping to raise the flag in an official ceremony.

Students, staff, and community members were in attendance.
