Viraldice: 50 Reasons ‘Groundhog Day’ Is the Best Holiday Movie Ever Made

6:00 a.m. Radio alarm goes off. Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe" blasts through the speakers and startles Phil awake. "It's Groundhog Day!"

Groundhog Day is without a doubt one of the most iconic comedies of all time. Bill Murray delivers straight gold as Phil Connors, the self-absorbed Pittsburgh TV weatherman who ends up living the same day, Groundhog Day, over and over and over again.

The film has become a cult classic since its release in 1993. In 2006, it was actually added to the United States National Film Registry because it is “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” (I’d say it’s all of the above.)

The movie is full of classic memorable performances — Andie MacDowell is her perfectly charming self as Connors’ producer and eventual love interest, Rita Hanson. Chris Elliot and Bill’s brother, Brian Doyle Murray, both help make the movie the utterly rewatchable masterpiece it is.

And who could forget Ned? Ned Ryerson!

Stephen Tobolowsky will live in the comedy hall of fame, which is definitely a thing, for all time thanks to his performance as Ned Ryerson, the overly-friendly former classmate of Phil’s who runs into him on the morning of Groundhog Day…repeatedly, until Phil simply cannot take it anymore.

We don’t normally think of Groundhog Day as a “holiday movie,” but that’s exactly what it is. It’s become such a staple in our lives that it usually lives in an echelon above the whole category. But Groundhog Day is a holiday, and even though it might not be as big a deal culturally as Christmas or Halloween, it has given us one of the most unforgettable films of all time.
